This is pretty much a re-do of the "USB Stomp" board to include
everything into one single design and one single resulting board.
It makes little sense - it's not that interesting a board - but the
impetus was mostly just to learn and use new features, both on the
design side and on the manufacturing side.
So this does two very big things:
- it uses the new TAC5242 / RP2354 design blocks as part of the
schematic and the PCB layout.
- the board is manufactured as one single flex board instead of having
separate "audio jacks" and "USB stomp" boards
In other words, it's the same as the combination of the "audio jacks"
board and the previous "USB stomp" board, that used a FFC cable to
connect the two, except now the FFC cable is basically part of the
design, and the traditional rigid parts have been replaced by FR4
stiffeners instead.
In the process, this does various other minor changes:
- No more separate BOOTSEL switch, which was a nightmare when the thing
was boxed up. Instead, the stomp switch doubles up as the BOOTSEL
switch too.
Connecting the same switch to both a GPIO and BOOTSEL needs a bit of
care: it would have been technically possible to only connect it to
the the BOOTSEL pin, and read it that way with no GPIO at all, but
the BOOTSEL line is also tied to the QSPI chip select pin, so then
reading just the status requires turning off FLASH access.
I considered doing exactly that, and it is entirely possible to do
(micropython even has a "rp2.bootsel_button()" function for this),
but when you use both cores, it's just very painful to make sure
neither core is accessing the flash while you read the BOOTSEL
status.
So adding a little bit of hardware makes it much easier, and isolates
the GPIO from the QSPI chip select using a dual diode. The switch
pulls both low, but the wiggling of the QSPI CS line doesn't affect
the GPIO.
While at it, this also does some minimal HW debouncing, since now we
might possibly be getting some high-frequency noise from the QSPI
side.
- Add a few LEDs and rotary encoders too as another portion connected
with the flex strips
- Add some missing 3D models
The 3D model for the rotary encoder is just my old 9mm potentiometer
model, it's not even remotely correct, but it approximates the
overall shape.
The 3D model for the WS2812B-2020 is me just half-arsing the official
kicad model generator and generating something that approximates the
real thing. It's very much a monkey-see-monkey-do thing that at least
gives me something to look at.
The RP2354 model is using the kicad model generator to add the QFN-60
model that the official repo doesn't have.
Note for next time: jlcpcb seems potentially happier with protel
filenames, but the automated layer recognition needs some manual
renaming anyway. So the bottom stiffener layer should then be manually
renamed to something like
BottomStiffenerLayer.fr4b_0.8.gbsl
just to make it as obvious as humanly possible.
