We picked a relay that can drive 120V at 2A (AC) from a 5V signal. We didn't care about the current for the relay because we are also driving that with a FET. So, then we picked an NMOSFET that can drive 200mA of current required by the relay at 5V from the 3.3V gate signal. We tried to pick a coil that would be low-current for power relay, for use with 5V. We wanted the highest possible switching voltage and current, with 120V as our required limit. For component selection, we set requirements that the coil voltage must be 5V, low current, and switch 120V (AC) at 2A of current. Here there were no routing considerations for high-speed design, as we were working with only low-speed digital signals. |
